Prayers & Evidence

Have you ever prayed for something that didn't come to pass? Have you ever tried to change something within yourself, which you figure you’d have the most control over – right? – and it didn't work? Probably. I know I have and I teach classes on prayer. There’s even that awful, sickly platitude that says, “God always answers prayers but sometimes the answer is no.” Bull-oney. God is not Santa Clause. God doesn't play favorites.

We all live and move and have our being within the living body of the Divine, what I often call the Field of Grace. But when a prayer didn't work the way I wanted it to, I’m frustrated. I feel like I failed. I wonder why God isn't listening to me. Then I remember – there are rules around prayers we want to have an outcome. Sure there are some prayers where we don’t expect an outcome – gratitude, acknowledgement, or praise don’t come with expectations.

However, some prayers are for change, healing, abundance, influence and grace. When these prayers don’t have an effect, we can get discouraged. So what do we need to do differently to make those prayer take hold and instigate the changes?

Here are some Deep Dark Secrets of the Light to you kick your prayers up a notch!

1.  Be clear on what you desire. Love. Health. Wealth. Perfect Self Expression. New Experiences. Whatever. It’s all good, regardless of what people have been telling you. Desire is a good thing. There’s an old joke that goes, “This life is only a test. If it were a real life you would have been given instructions on where to go and what to do.” But you were given instructions – they were placed in your heart. Your soul remembers. Your soul knows what to do. But you have to be willing to trust your desires more than you trust the fear-based prattlings programmed into you growing up.

2.  Focus on your desires – not on what you don’t want. Whatever you focus upon grows. And while you may hear yourself saying “I don’t want to be an ostrich with my head in the sand,” give yourself a bit more credit. If you are practicing being present to the eternal now you can see the effects of old thoughts out-pictured in your life. If you don’t like what you see, think differently. Focus your attention on what you do want and let the other stuff go.

3.  Get to the bottom of why you don’t have what you desire and deal with it.  We often believe the crap that’s going on inside of our heads. We tell ourselves something and believe that this has to be true. Unfortunately, most of it is garbage, especially when it deals with US. We can often talk to friends and give them great advice. Yet when it comes to ourselves we struggle. It’s usually our underlying beliefs that get in our own way.

  • I am unworthy.
  • Only awful people are rich (thin, successful, beautiful).
  • I don’t really know what I want.
  • There isn't enough to go around.
  • My parents (society, my circumstances) are awful.
Don’t believe everything you tell yourself. Most of the time it’s just an echo of somebody else’s fear-based babbling. They didn't mean any harm but the gift of mass self-awareness is fairly new.

4.  Open yourself up to the guidance of the Universe. Signs. Helpful people. Intuitive hits. Once you commit yourself to your dreams, the Universe moves to make it happen. The Universe LOVES a person with a dream. It RESPONDS to a person with a plan. Whatever it is, the Universe will guide you. So listen to those intuitive hits. Follow through. It’s the only way you’re going to learn what your intuition feels like.

It’s the only way your soul is going to learn to have faith in your ability to listen. Once it realizes you’re paying attention – watch out. You’ll soon discover that there is no such thing as a ‘still small voice.’ You’ll learn that the Divine is chatty, persistent, and ecstatic that you’re willing to share your life with it. That’s what joy is all about.

5.  Do your part. Are you willing to take the action? Yeah – it’s easier to dream than to do. And some dreams don’t require a whole lot of doing on our parts but others do. Take every step that your intuition tells you to take. How do you know the difference between intuitive guidance and the ego’s fear-based ramblings?

Go into communion – really get centered within the Field of Grace and open yourself to your heart’s wisdom. Send your consciousness there and sit in the silence. A lot of the first stuff that rambles through is your monkey-mind. It will feel chaotic. But soon, a peacefulness will settle in. You’ll get ideas float to the surface and they will be tinged with joy. Then do it. Follow through. When you’re done with that, go back into communion and do it again. If you make a habit of asking for guidance and then doing it, your conduit will become stronger.

6.  Be the change you want to see. This is an excellent Gandhi quote and it’s also how prayer works. Prayers work when we change our energetic relationship to a situation. As long as you’re railing against the unfairness of our money-based world, you’re going to block your ability to receive your abundance. As long as you call yourself names when you look in the mirror, you’re not going to change your weight. As long as you envy your friends’ love lives, you won’t be able to have a satisfying one of your own.

When you see yourself as victim in any way, you perpetuate the victim-like conditions. You need to move that object of your desire into the “have” column, long before you actually have it.

7.  Allow yourself to receive what you desire. Too often we’re closed off from receiving what we desire either because we are too specific in our heads on what it should look like or we can’t believe it was that easy or we think we’re not worthy.

  • Getting too specific on what your desire should look like can be a trap. Imagine, instead, what it feels like to get your desire.
  • Yes. It really can be easy. Too much effort, in fact, pushes our desires farther away.
  • Worthiness is an ego-generated fallacy. We were all created from the same god-stuff and we will return to the same god-stuff. The Divine is equally within all of us and supports our desires by reflecting back to us what we focus upon. Good. Bad. Or indifferent.
8.  Surrender the outcome. Let go of control. Surrender, as I may have mentioned before, leads to piece. Surrendering the outcome lets the Universe manifest your desires without you getting your fears and frustrations into the mix.

Prayer works, especially when you align your practice with solid energetic principles. The good news with this is if you're having trouble manifesting your desires, look within. Also, remember, that your soul has reasons your ego knows nothing of. Sometimes, your soul has a plan that brings you places that are bigger and better than you could have imagined.

This is why it's always good to end a prayer with, "This or something better, as it helps all and harms none. And so it is. Amen."
